Paintings 2019
Most of my work has an underlying narrative which may directly show in the imagery or be hidden. Often this narrative is a result of my life experiences and imaginary landscapes appear during my thoughts on life dilemmas or they are influenced by the need for reflection on the spiritual aspects of life and my desire to 'go missing' in the land.
Waterfalls and rivers have been important recent elements for me to explore and sometimes figures appear. While the movement through imaginary places is a recurring theme, these elements tend to appear as I explore shape and colour in the search for an image that will convey my meditations on life through the magic of paint.
These paintings also continue to explore some ideas which evolved from 3 trips to China, my interest in calligraphic brush strokes, and their evocation of imaginary places.
Often my imagery develops from the act of painting and the processes I use, and I allow abstract and figurative elements to find their way in to the painting without pre-planning but sometimes I work from a particular title which suggests elements and colours.
