This is one of several new works I've made this year combining different materials, in this case canvas on canvas. I have been exploring different kinds of canvas and the one I stretched is a creamy, satiny type of canvas which registers marks of colour very much like ink on rice paper. I wanted to use this as a starting point and build into that with collaged brown canvas which has then also been painted. I wanted the process and marks to direct the direction of the image. I also was thinking about how we are all looking for safety and security in our lives, and about migrants at sea in small boats.
