This was painted on raw canvas pinned to the wall of the studio because I was not able to find stretchers in the art shops. It set off a whole new way of working for me because I worked my colour and mixed materials like on a scroll or tapestry, and my inspiration was my walk up the mountain to the Great Wall. I was thinking about all the footsteps across the centuries of people going up the mountain and their lives became symbolised by areas of colour. It also opened up new ways of mixing materials.
Another new approach that is an integral part of this painting is the deliberate crinkling of the canvas which I created and then worked on top of. This influenced how I worked with my various materials.
