Mark Rothko Plein Air Exhibition, 25th September 2012 (Daugavpils, Latvia)
Mark Rothko Plein Air Residency Exhibition
01/10/2012
15 artists worked towards this exhibition, which took place at the Daugavpils Museum of Regional Studies and Art, Daugavpils, Latvia, on 25th September - to commemorate the birthday of Mark Rothko.
I painted four canvases, but three were shown due to lack of space. It was an exhibition that was viewed by journalists and people from the media, and I was one of several artists who were interviewed for television. What impressed me was the diversity of styles. When I was working in my shared studio, I had little contact with the other artists during the course of painting, though from time to time we visited each other. I had little idea what their finished works would be, and the exhibition was a surprise for me.
There will be a catalogue, and each artist will have one work reproduced. They chose my largest work, (which I am pictured with) - entitled, 'Flying into Riga Airport.' It is 100 x 140cm, oil and acrylic on canvas.
Our paintings will form part of the collection at the new Mark Rothko Centre, due to open on April 24th, 2013.
I have written about the residency at length on my Blog, (the link is in the links section of this website).
